A modern car is made up of many different systems such as engine, brake system, wheels, intake and exhaust system, clutch and transmission, radiator and cooling systems, power steering, etc.
The most common automobile design consists of an accelerator pedal controlled engine that draws in air through an air intake, gasoline or diesel from a fuel tank, ignites them and converts the combustion into mechanical motion of camshafts. This motion is made to power the wheels through the controls and gears of a clutch and transmission system. The steering movement of the vehicle is controlled with a steering wheel, connected to the front axle with tie rods and a power steering system. Stopping power is provided by clasping metal or ceramic brake pads onto rotors mounted on wheels, to slow them down with friction. A suspension system made of shocks, struts and springs provides comfort while driving over rough roads.
Each of the systems is further enhanced with many additional components and systems are integrated in a complex way to work in sync. For instance, air drawn passes through an air filter, fuel passes through a fuel filter, engine oil through an oil filter in order to avoid contaminants, enhancing vehicle life. Exhaust systems consist of catalytic converters for purification as well as mufflers and exhaust manifolds and pipes. Steering systems consist of ball joints, rack and pinions, steering pumps, fluids and belts. Cooling systems consist of air conditioner compressor, radiators, coolant tanks and fluids and snapper parts in order to prevent engine overheating. The drivetrain comprises of the transmission, driveshaft, axles and wheels of a vehicle. Located behind the transmission, its role is to propel the vehicle forward by transferring power from the transmission to the drive wheels to control the amount of torque. Its components include CV joints (constant velocity joints), the differential, axle shafts and U-joints (universal joints). The universal joint, located along driveshaft, is a coupling that connects two shafts that are at different angles to one another and both rotate freely without excess friction. Drivetrain components vary according to type of vehicle. Manual transmission cars have gears, clutches, propeller shafts and rear axles. Automatic transmission cars have torque converters, transmissions, propellers and rear axles.
