High temperatures in a vehicle’s engine damage the engine and engine components if left unmanaged. The cooling system in a vehicle prevents high temperatures in the engine. A vehicle’s cooling system consists of a water pump that allows coolant (also known as antifreeze) to circulate throughout the components of the engine. Without a working water pump, it’s only a matter of time before your vehicle overheats. This article will tell you the common symptoms of a bad water pump, the cost of replacing a faulty water pump, and the factors that influence the cost of a water pump replacement.

1 What Are The Symptoms Of A Bad Car Water Pump?

There are several symptoms that indicate that your vehicle’s water pump needs to be replaced immediately. They are as follows:

Overheating Engine

An overheated engine is the most common sign of a faulty water pump. An engine temperature warning light, a symbol with wavy lines, or an increased engine temperature reading on the dashboard will indicate this. Another symptom of an overheating engine is steam coming out from the front of the vehicle. A working water pump circulates coolant through the engine, allowing the engine to cool down. But a bad water pump will cause the heat to increase to unsafe levels and can cause the valves and pistons to seize up or the cylinder head to crack. A clogged radiator, a broken thermostat, leaking radiator hoses, and failing radiator fans can all contribute to overheating of the engine. So before changing any component, always thoroughly inspect the entire system.

Unusual Noises From The Engine

A loose auxiliary drive belt in an engine, caused by worn-out bearings or a loose pulley, could make a whining, buzzing, or screeching noise. If the faulty bearings are in the water pump, they must be completely replaced. An auxiliary drive belt that is overly tight is one of the most common reasons for premature water pump failure. If you opt to change the water pump yourself, it is strongly advised that you obtain a belt tension gauge to ensure that the tension is set correctly.

Coolant Leaks

Coolant leaks happen if a water pump seal or gasket around the water pump wears out. It can also happen due to the cracking or breaking of the water pump because of old age or tears. The coolant color is often green or orange. A coolant leak doesn’t always mean that there’s a problem with the water pump. The problem could also be any of the following: a broken hose, a defective radiator, or a failing seal. So it’s important to diagnose the coolant leak immediately. Without the correct amount of coolant in the engine, the motor can fail completely, leading to engine failure.

2 What Factors Influence The Cost Of A Car Water Pump Replacement?

There are several price-influencing factors to consider when determining the cost of a water pump replacement. The following are the most important factors to consider:

Vehicle Make and Model

One of the main factors affecting the price of a water pump is the car and engine model you drive. Because a smaller water pump is most likely installed in a small engine, the cost of the smaller water pump will be low. On the other hand, the bigger the water pump, the higher the price, and more effort is required to replace the water pump.

OEM vs. Aftermarket

The OEM water pump is your best option if you want your car to continue running as it did from the factory. However, water pumps from aftermarket suppliers continue to provide dependable service.

DIY vs. Professional

If you are able to replace a faulty water pump on your own, you save a lot of money on labor. However, if you are unable to replace a bad water pump, you must take your vehicle to a mechanic. The labor charge depends on where you are located and the type of car you drive.

Cost Of Additional Parts

While replacing your water pump, you can’t just buy a new water pump and assume that that is the only thing you need. For a complete replacement of the water pump, you will also need to buy a new coolant and a water pump gasket. And if some other part is damaged, such as a serpentine belt, timing belt, or water pump pulleys, you will also need to replace that too. This will result in buying additional parts and higher repair costs. In some vehicles, the water pump is driven by the timing belt, and both of these components are usually replaced at the same time. This can increase the replacement cost of the water pump, and you will also be required to know how much it will cost to replace a timing belt.
